What's with Jiraiya pretending he doesn't know Kushina.

Jiraiya is talking about Kushina to Tsunade like her barely knew of her, claiming he'd forgotten her name, but if he trained with Minato and was more or less a father figure, he'd know Kushina quite well.

We don't know how long they were together before they died, whether it was when Minato saved Kushina when they were kids or if they didn't wait until they were both older. If they were only together for a short time or after Jiraiya had taught Minato, then it definitely explains why he doesn't know much about her... Especially considering all his time and energy later went into tracking down Orochimaru and following Akatsuki's movements.

But my theory is that this was the merely a more dynamic way for Kishimoto to introduce a bit of Naruto's parentage to us readers.

Don't treat Naruto like a textbook. It's not absolute. Like I always say, just consider the possibility that Kishimoto made a mistake when drawing his manga. While it's fun to make characters real, we have to remember that they are just pieces of paper made by a dude who has made many contradictions in his manga.
