What is actually a troll and how are people classed as one ?

I obviously know the basic meaning of a troll, what they do and the reception they receive on this site. Its just that lots of people seem to have different definitions for troll.

I come from the early days of the social internet, when forums were largely about professional and political topics. Before "all your base," 1337, pwned, etc.

In that era, we had a term called "trawling." Trawling is, basically, dragging a net through the water in order to catch whatever fish happen across it (occasionally a bait is used). A "forum trawl" was a statement intended to provoke a certain group of people into a fruitless, non-productive discussion. Basically "pushing everyone's buttons."

Somewhere along the way, much like how "owned" became "pwned" through typos, someone came up with the idea of calling them "trolls" (probably due to the phonetic similarity between trawl and troll). The name stuck, probably because the catch-phrase became: "stop feeding the trolls." (Don't post to people who obviously intend only to try and get people riled up).

Though, as with everything, the more something is used, the more its use becomes open to different lines of subjective reasoning. So a "troll" has become a number of different things to people. I stick to the 'old' definition of a forum-trawl, but many others will use the term in a way that I consider erroneous.

You can type "troll definition" on Google and you will get your result but if you want to know the true definition of troll on this site then I would consider hardcore fan-boys as trolls [though I would consider that as pure stupidity] due to them living in their own little world until the point they couldn't even accept the truth and choose to argue a senseless argument. That's the only definition that would suit well with what I've see so far.

Plus, the troll message shown to you always consist of any remarks that made ur OT childish and garbage.

But, provided that ur OT is purely correct by most and officially stated. Not all troll post are harmful, some might have hidden lesson and meaning. Its only obvious when someone clearly insult you LITERALLY.
