What's the point of Indra and Ashura?

To me they seem fodderish and unnecessary. I don't understand why Kishi introduced them if they woudln't play any major role in the manga(other then they are founders of two strongest clans).

They are waste of time. Kishi shouldn't have bothered with them.

It was to justify why Madara was the only person to unlock the Rinnegan and give Naruto and Sasuke sufficient power-ups to defeat him. I don't think there is really anything more to it; other than to perhaps justify why Sasuke met Hagoromo along side Naruto or the power-up.

Indra and Ashura are very important in religion and legends , and since Kishi like to bring those things to his manga , he also put Indra and Ashura , and maybe he is going to show us their own story .
