this is my best guess too, though I suppose it'd also be possible that it was just because of the rumor of how enormous his power was.

Most likely this, the reason it resembles the rinnegan so much is because Indras sharingan was the first "sharingan" His mother had the sharrinnegan or w/e which is why hers is rinnegan and sharingan mix. His is leaning more toward the sharingan and will evolve closer to the rinnegan.

It's either his MS, or just a wood carving style (if you go to museums, wood carved eyes have a spiral design, instead of the usual circle to separate the iris to the cornea).
