technically the same thing just different missions and leader.
Anbu is the public force under direct orders from the hokage and the village are fully aware of them.
Root- do the dirty work, and evil things that all villages need done. More secretive,more restrictions and Danzo personally gives orders.
Some ninja have been in both anbu and root...root is tougher to get into and means you are more elite.
both use codenames and wear mask for safety and amenity
