Alright, so so far we know very little about the exact abilities of the rinnegan. Basically all we've seen is that with it, Nagato's bodies have shared vision, and we've been told that the possessor of the rinnegan has all 5 elemental affinities.
However, we also know that the other 2 eye techniques (Sharingan and Byakugan) stemmed out from the rinnegan. Both of these eye techniques have some sort of taijutsu-related or chakra-sensing-related ability. The sharingan gives the user a terrific reaction time and the ability to see what move their opponent is going to make next, and it allows the user the 'see' chakra. The byakugan, on the other hand, gives the user near-360 degree vision, and the ability to see a specific person's chakra in great detail, as well as the ability to span great distances with their vision.
I propose that the rinnegan gives the user a similar version of both these abilities, but to a greater extent, though Pain/Nagato's use of it may be restricted to his original body (Nagato) at most times.
Note here, Kakashi attempts to Raikiri God Realm and, even with his sharingan, God Realm manages to avoid it, if nearly by an inch.
I found this page very interesting for that reason.
Now, assuming the rinnegan gives the user some sort of taijutsu-related power, perhaps Pain's true body (Nagato) has hidden taijutsu (and chakra-sensing) abilities similar to a combination of Sharingan and Byakugan hidden up his sleeve.
One might argue that, if Nagato's true body has such hidden abilities, Nagato shouldn't have to hide himself. To that, I offer up two possibilities:
1. Nagato is suffering from some sort of disease. We've seen so far that powerful eye techniques (MS) come at a great price resulting in blindness and, in Itachi's case, death. Due to overuse of the Rinnegan, I propose that Nagato has contracted a disease similar to Itachi's and that Rinnegan-related abilities (such as God Realm's Edo Tensei) make the disease progress.
2. Nagato considers his true body to be too important to risk in a battle, no matter how powerful he is. In other words, he's a coward who's too afraid to go into battle himself, lest he be hit by a stray kunai.
Comments, questions?
