Reading through a lot of various manga, I see over and over again that when perverts get aroused they get massive nosebleeds. What on earth is the deal with that? I've seen it in Dragonball and One Piece particularly I just didn't know if anyone knew why that happens.

I'm a yaoi fangirl, who reads plenty plus regular manga and I don't get it either. Other fans even squeal online about getting nosebleeds and its like... Does that even happen in real life? Iun get it in regular manga during pervert moments or in the yaoi :|

would you rather the blood be shown going somewhere else? lol
Hahaha, that would at least make sense if the blood went somewhere else. It's just odd for me, likely because of not being Japanese, to see that happen. I guess it's just part of the manga culture for perverts.

I'm not 100% sure, but i think this is why it happens.

Whenever someone perverted see something that is arousing to them, the blood rushes to their face in embarrassment and, since the blood vessels in the nose are very close to the inside lining of the nose, they burst, causing a nosebleed. The level of amount of blood is usually suppossed to represent how aroused they were at that situation, so someone who has a larger and more exaggerated nosebleed is more aroused in comparison to one with a only a small nosebleed.

Ok I did some research and here's what I found...

The History: It's a long-standing Japanese folk belief that a nosebleed may signify sexual thoughts or arousal. The belief may have come into being in part because nosebleeds are reportedly more common in men than in women, although of late the joke of a female character suffering nosebleeds due to perverted thoughts has becoming increasingly popular, such as in Maria+Holic, Kannagi, and Doujin Work. On the other hand, if the Japanese folk belief has roots in the reality of who suffers nosebleeds, the trope should be more about dirty old men than teenage boys: nosebleeds are also more common in those under 10 or over 50. But in Ranma ½, it's young and innocent Ryoga, not raunchy old Happosai, who suffers frequent nosebleeds.

Real Physics: A nosebleed, or epistaxis, can be caused by dozens of factors, including blunt trauma, an acute infection, allergies, dry air, and a variety of diseases and conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure). The area from which most nosebleeds come, known as Little's area (the front part of the nose), sports a high density of capillaries; small blood vessels which are easily ruptured.

The association between epistaxis and hypertension appears to be disputed in the medical community (as seen in the conclusions of these three studies). Nosebleeds are seen as a possible symptom of ongoing hypertension by the U.S. National Library of Medicine; however, the Library does not cite sexual arousal or a temporary increase in blood pressure as a cause for nosebleeds.

Thanks for the research, it sounds sensible enough.

When blushing: blood rushes to your face to make it look red, right? Well the nose bleeds are a form of extreme blushing.

It really can happen in real life too, you see something and you blush so hard you get a nose bleed.
