I live in the U.S. as well. Hatred towards gays is mostly closeted in the area where I live. Which is good, people are starting to realize condemning and insulting gay people is wrong.
I do live in a mostly conservative area though, and I can say that there are a few people that disapprove of gay marriage. It has nothing to do with hatred towards gays, they just think marriage is by definition between a man and a woman. Generally they agree that gays who want to get married but can't are entitled to the same rights married men and women are though. I think they just want "gay marriage," to have its own term separate from marriage.
