First, the manga said the were both destroyed or something along those lines. Indra was the older brother, from the manga we know that at a point Ashura wasn't up to stuff, so Indra must have thought that since his brother wasn't strong enough, he would be chosen by his father, when that didn't happen he went through emotional turmoil much like what happened when Sasuke found out about the truth behind Itachi, with his resolve made he went up against his brother, Ashura knowing he could not win against Indra did what the Sage predicted and used the power of his allies and his own. In the aftermath of the fight however, both died.
