What's going on with the villages?

I was just wondering, with the war going on, what's happening with the hidden villages? Have they evacuated? If not who's running them and how are they doing? There are a number of shinobi that have not been featured in the war (Iruka, Baki, etc.) and I assume they're holding the fort.

I guess what I'm really asking is, why didn't Tobi & Kabuto make an attempt to attack the villages and why hasn't Kishi shown it? It might make the story that much more compelling.

Because the war is to get the tailed beasts, not to attack villages and it has only lasted a few weeks if not days, and Naruto is giving them a good fight. No time to try to attack the villages.

Agreed, but then why are they having a huge war at all? It's to distract the shinobi and draw out Naruto and B. If the struck the Hidden Leaf and Cloud to begin with, it may have drawn them out faster.

Well when Tobi confronted the kage and told them to "give" them to him or else. But they refused. And he knew that was going to be their natural reaction, so considering their resources, he palnned to counter their big ass army with a bigger army.

This war is simply the "or else".

When Sasuke passed through a town, it was deserted, so at least a few are evacuated

Forgot about that, good catch.

The point is to force the allied shinobi forces into using Naruto and B or else making Naruto and B come out on their own. Attacking their home villages and harming civilians would have been an effective means of doing that.
