...the human nature. It's amazing how quickly you can turn the fodder-table when one doesn't perform how you expect, which is always in perfection, I assume. There hasn't been a serious war for over 10 years. The villages practically became united, the peace was long and prosperous. On top of all that, the top of the food chain was commanded by god-level shinobi in Konoha and one running around the world. They didn't need to train, one was stuck with paperwork and politics, the other one was investigating a pending threat.
Time for training in spite all those reasons above? Irrelevant. You say they're fodders because Naruto got stabbed and Sasuke jumped in front of Sarada instead of using Susanoo? For one, they didn't know the MS power of the villain. Two, Naruto was in bsm, cloaked and shielded by Sasuke. Without knowing the MS power, it was natural for him to be at leisure. Sasuke didn't use Susanoo because his basic instincts of protection kicked in after he saw Sarada getting attacked. Self-sacrifice is the first thing on one's mind when he wants to protct the ones he loves.
Actually, with them getting those fatal wounds, I praise them for being able to stand after it.
