I've interacted with plenty of crazy, rude and/or scandalous people at work. Remaining calm and polite works well in many cases (they exhaust their anger, see that you aren't affected and have to give up). I only get into confrontations if someone insults those I care about, really (it's more like a trigger though).

I block her using the back of arm before she slaps and then I ring the police and get her arrested for attempted assault.

Then when it gets to court, I hire a good brief to trash her right though to the end of the trial. Such dirt needs to learn that smoking really does have consequences.
