Every single shinobi needed the help/teachings/experiences of another one at some point of their lives. No one in the NV really is an autodidact at 100%. So, Sasuke would naturally seek the help of someone. Even more so that he had a goal to accomplish.

Orochimaru sure had a great impact on his improvement, but it doesn't mean he would have failed otherwise. Sasuke did most of his trainings on his own after all.
