That is true, but he did finish himself off against Sasuke by the continuous Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi and Susanoo. So he could have probably live a few more months.

No he was still taking the meds, you have to understand the strain that susanoo does, We've seen how it left Sasuke who was in way better shape compared to the dying Itachi.

He'd think he failed. The whole point of all he did was to make sasuke strong. If sasuke couldn't even beat the guy itachi 1 paneled then there's clearly nothing more itachi could do for him since he was dying soon anyway.
