They could of captured him and awaited until the other Jinchuriki were captured to seal him into the statue. That way Naruto wouldn't of progressed into such a hindrance for the Akatsuki and would of still been a novice.

itachi would ahve captured naruto. hes brutal and sociopathic so yeah.
he had no problem helping to capture and murder the other jins. so he clearly doesnt care if akatsuki obtain nukes.
itachi was ready to have innocent people, even naruto, slaughtered if it meant sasuke got Mangekeyo.
