So I was rewatching the original anime when Gaara and Lee faced eachother during the preliminaries and started thinking. After Lee took his leg weights off, even if he didn't realized it, he was in a really advantageous position. At least to beat Gaara in his regular form.
We know that he could outrun the sand and breach the "automatic sand".
We know that the sand armor Gaara used to guard against the attack above has a heavy price (Yes I know that Lee didn't know that but this is all hypothetical anyways).
We know that Lee had so far not opened a single gate since this was before the initial lotus was performed.
In other words Lee was at this point at a clear advantage since he could pound his opponent without any real fear of getting caught himself. Now obviously what happend was that he jumped the gun and tried to finnish Gaara off with the initial Lotus. But what if he hadn't?
I'd say he would have forced Gaara to go one-tail mode.
Now another question is, would this have stopped Lee? In all honesty I am not sure that this mode enchances Gaara's speed enough to actually do something about fast moving Lee. It will be more problematic to damage Gaara though, but what if Lee openend the first gate at this time? performing the initial lotus? and to take it even further, if Lee opened the five gates at this moment instead. Is it possible that he could have forced out Gaara's final form?
What do you guys think? If Lee for some magical reason played every card at the best possible moment, how far would he have pushed Gaara? What do you think would have happened if Gaara showed more of his strength this early in the exams instead of out in forest with no one around?
Note. I am not posting this in VS since I don't think it's a VS thread. This is not about determening who's the strongest since that is in my opinion very clear since A:It was allready determined in the manga B: Gaara is ridicilously strong at this point in comparisson. This thread is more about how the manga would have turned out if a character made another decision than the one he made.
