Sasuke retreats from the great shinobi war's battlefield to ponder his conversation with his brother.
The war ends withe the 5 great nations being victorious. Tsunade retires as Hokage and Naruto (hailed as the hero of the war) becomes Hokage.
Naruto declares that no shinobi of the leaf will bring harm to Sasuke, and that he himself will deal with him once he is located
----Flash to Konoha in the distant future-----
An old man is sitting in a rocking chair with several children around him. One of the children points to the rock carving of the 6th Hokage (Naruto Uzumaki)
Child: Grandpa, could you tell us the story about how the 6th Hokage died?
Old Man: Oh...I guess I could. It happened 50 years ago....
-----Flash to 50 years prior (The old man becomes the narrator)----
Narrator: The 6th was a powerfull shinobi, but above all else he cared for his comrades. There was one in particular that he would never give up on, even though this one was bent on destroying the village. One day, an organization known as Root located this rogue shinobi and set out to kill him against the Hokage's orders, but word made it to the Hokage.
Naruto (6th Hokage): What???!!!! I told them, I would take care of Sasuke. They will just Kill him, and the cycle of hatred will continue.
Kakashi: Where are you going?
Naruto: To stop them, and bring Sasuke back to the village once and for all.
Narrator: Now Root had set up an ambush for the rogue shinobi and perfectly executed it...
----Flash to Sasuke----
2 root members distract Sasuke from the front while 8 others throw kunai at him from behind. Much to their surprise Sasuke managed to dodge their assault and only take minor cuts from 2 glancing kunai. Enraged, Sasuke activates his EMS and Susanoo.
Sasuke: Mwa..ha...ha. You really think, those as weak as yourself would be able to take me on.
Sasuke envolopes the two root members in front of him with amaterasu shot from his susanoo. However, Sasuke starts to stagger a bit, then his susanoo disperses.
Root member 1: Ha...The great Sasuke Uchiha. We expected you would dodge most of our first attack, but all we were trying to do was cut you with at least one of the kunai.
Sasuke: ....poison??!!
Root member 1: Don't worry, it just paralyzes you...we want to kill you ourselves for what you did to Danzo. Say good-bye Sasuke Uchiha.
The root members throw kunai with paper bombs attached towards Sasuke. A great explosion follows. After the smoke clears we see a close up on Sasuke's face looking up in utter shock.
Sasuke: N...Naruto??!!
The screen pans out to reveal Naruto shielding Sasuke with his body. His clothes are burnt off of his back and kunai are sticking out of his charred back.
Naruto: Y...Yeah...Dattebayo!
Root Member 1: The Hokage! Quick, finish them both off! We'll say they killed each other.
Kakashi: That might work if...it weren't for us.
the screen pans back to reveal Kakashi and the remaining Konoha 11. A quick skirmish takes place, but Kakashi and the konoha 11 disable the root members in a matter of seconds. Kakashi and Sakura run to Naruto and Sasuke. Sakura begins to try healing Naruto.
Naruto: Sakura...I'm too badly injured. Even with your healing and the healing Kurama grants me, I'm not going to make it through this.
Sakura: Shut up you idiot! Why would you go and do this!
Naruto looking to Sasuke: Because Sasuke is my comrade, and those who turn their backs on their comrades are worse than scum. Remember that Sasuke. That was one of the first things we learned when we became team 7. Over time we became more than comrades though...I've come to think of you as my brother. Please Sasuke, stop the cycle of hatred. Itachi did everything he did because he was your brother and cared about you. I've done everything I've done for the same reason. That's the answer to Master Jiraiya's quest. The only thing that can break the cycle of hatred, is to replace it with caring. Open your eyes...the ones you got from your brother whom cared about you. Go back to the village where people care about you despite what you've done.
Naruto's words hit Sasuke harder than any attack he had ever received. He realized he had been wrong all this time. He realized that power from hatred was empty and meaningless. He began to weep.
Naruto looking to Kakashi: I think you'll make a great 7th Hokage. My last official act as Hokage is to pardon Sasuke Uchiha of all crimes against Konoha. Please help him in his rehabilitation. -Naruto looks to the rest of the Konoha 11- All of you, help him.
Naruto looks over and sees Jiraiya sitting on a rock breaking a popcycle apart and holding half of it out to him
Naruto to all around: Looks like it is time for me to go. Dattebayo!
Naruto internally talks to Kurama
Naruto: I know we've been through alot. Once I die, you will be released. Go, live your life in this world free from hatred. I've shown you the way.
Kurama: Thank you, Naruto Uzumaki.
Naruto closes his eyes and takes his last breath
----Flash back to the old man talking to his grandson----
Old man: That is the story of the how the 6th Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki died. He was the hero who saved the 5 great shinobi nations. However, he sacrificed himself to save just one of his friends.
Child: What happened to his friend...the rogue shinobi?
Old man: It took him time to overcome the guilt from all the pain he had caused, but he eventually became happy and is living a life full of happiness and caring.
An old woman walks up
Old Woman: It's getting late. All you children better head home for supper.
Child: But grandma....
Old Woman: No, buts!!! Head along home.
The child hangs his head low, but then turns and starts to walk home
Child: OK....See you later grandpa Sasuke. See you later grandma Sakura.
Sakura looks at Sasuke and then looks at Naruto's face on the mountain
Sakura: He really was something great wasn't he?
Sasuke: yeah...-Sasuke smiled-...for an idiot.
The screen pans in to a close up of Naruto's face on the mountain and then fades to black
