The director was passionate and you could tell how much care he put into every scene. The story was by the guy who wrote Expendables and Doom, no wonder it was stupid. The screenplay was by done by Max Borenstein, the guy who worked on the screenplay for the awful terribly received Seventh Son so no wonder the dialogue was cheesy as ****. So while the director and CGI team made the best of a piece of shit script, the fact is Legendary is a stupid company that threw away millions of dollars on a script written by idiots which I have no idea why they chose to write such a movie.

The first mistake was not having enough Godzilla.
Would have been ok if the human plot wasn't complete forgettable shit. All you're left with is a couple scenes of cool monsters moving around, then a short battle scene at the end. It felt really cheesy and amateur.

Also killing off Bryan Cranston's character was a terrible decision. The movie could have used the estrange father-son relationship and have them re-bond throughout the events of the movie, and keeping him alive would have provided a greater impact that Cranston was right all along...and he was about the only interesting character in the film.

He was interesting because he was such a good actor. Other than that his character itself was terribly written.

Like someone said above, not enough Godzilla.
It was focusing more on the main character's mission and his promise to return home to his family than Godzilla wrecking havoc or saving the world. Even the MUTOS had more screen time than Godzilla himself.
