What was the purpose of keeping the 5 Kage alive?

Only Gaara has done anything out of all of them since arriving on the battlefield. I mean sure we get this reunion with Tsunade and Hashirama but that's really all that's happened.

At first, I thought that Kishi kept them alive for a specific reason as they will go up against Madara and really prove their strength combined but guess not :|

Again bad writing, they survived because lost to Madara or not they are the leaders of the 5 nations and they had to be there to stand and fight for the final battle. The only justified death of the 5 would have been onoki because hes 90+

Them dying to put a new person from each village as kage would have had to foreshadowed people from the villages like naruto to do so and even then they are like teens. I couldn't see that happening and i never expected them to die there.

For good writing? more like bad writing. They would have died epic deaths and would have had good conclusion to their character (if so maybe gaara should have been the only one to live) , but kishi has written this whole war pretty bad especially considering the only important character to have died so far has been neji. maybe its the editors telling to not kill off characters cause it doesn't seem like kishi's style considering kishi killed off many characters (each at the right time) in part 1 of naruto and the beginning of shippuden.
