The intertwining storylines of multiple charcters and it's leading to the big picture was the best aspect. I feel many people remained loyal to the brand due to this despite their various criticisms. A sort of puzzle effect was created and it made you want to know what happens next if nothing else.
It was also a weakness too though. The story was so vast and dramatic that while it made for a great tale, it required more action/eventfulness for it to properly blend well. Some people may have noticed this flaw after reading the manga then watching the anime. The anime suffered in some ways from lack of enough excitement and action to go along with the storytelling. Which is probably why Naruto isn't as popular in the US as other anime with simpler storylines and more action like DBZ. You don't notice it as much reading the manga, but there was too much story to tell and not enough eventfulnes from the manga to translate into motion well. So the anime seems dragged out because it has to put so much effort into explaining the story
