What was Naruto's rank during Kakashi's reign as Hokage?

I doubt he still remained a genin considering all of his achievements, but it would be ridiculous to have Naruto do any Chuunin/Jounin testing.

Kakashi did mention he learned well and there was nothing left to teach, is it possible he just became a Hokage understudy and not of official shinobi rank until assuming the mantle of Nandaime Hokage?
