Madara and Hashirama represent the Older and Younger son
Madara wants peace through power by doing an infinite tsukuyomi
Hashirama represents the younger son and should want peace through love
While Hashi was alive he started the village system

More trivial and interesting question: who the fu*k killed Hashirama?

After Hasi beat Madara, he proceeded to collect many biju. He had a total of six. The villages were still new and unstable and they feared the leaf would use the beasts to take over.
To gain peace, he scattered the biju to other villages to create balance.
However, that made the other villages paranoid of attack and ambitious to attack other villages.
Hashirama just being alive kept that from happening so villiages occasionally sent assassins.
It is said that Hashirama died for peace which makes me think he was a sacrifice or something.
His death triggered the first ninja war.
