What was Danzo's deal?

He did both good and bad. But in the end, no matter what anyone has to say, he did in fact care for the Hidden Leaf.

That's why I'm confused, I got the sense he was just power hungry and wanted to control everything, but then where did his noble loyalty to his village come from? He seemed selfish but then all of a sudden selfless.

He truly believed he was the only person who could steer Konoha, and the world, in the right course. He truly thought if he died, the world would not have peace. Or at least until someone else with his mindset came along. Everything he did he did for, in his eyes, the security and future of Konoha and the Ninja World.
That comes off as selfishness to many people. But in the end it was revealed to be the opposite.

His problem was that he was burdened with all the hate of the leaf......hiruzen's folly for sure....he cared too much for the leaf in a way so much in fact that he was willing to risk it all for minor advantages.

He was selfish for selfless reasons.

He only wanted power so he could protect Konoha, and felt that only he could protect it.

that's pretty cool, because he was willing to do crazy stuff like slaughter an entire clan while others like Hiruzen would be too soft and empathetic to do so (like when he hesitated to stop Orochimaru from fleeing). Personally I think he was handled quite well.

He should've been given 1 unarguably good deed to go along with the 1 unarguably bad deed of helping Hanzō destroy Akatsuki. That's my singular complaint about Danzō's character.

Many people say that he was a "hero of shadows", but I disagree, he wasn't selfless neither he was willing to sacrifice his dreams and life for the others' sake, as Itachi did, for example.

When Pain attacked Konoha, he was willing to let other people die for his own ambition, for example. This isn't what a true shinobi would do.
