After taking a look at my sig for a while I came to realize something both Ashura and Indra inherited a portion of the Sage's power, but incomplete. Both the ES and YS incarnations follow their set paths, this is why Obito gained the Sun staff (path of the YS) and Madara gained the Moon staff (path of the ES). This means that the Sage does not only have Yang and Yin, but is the incarnation of the complete form of both paths not just in power, but as a person.

Its possible him and his brother were like his two sons indra/ashura who inherited half of his power, and the only way to become one is to combined. so maybe the sage and his brother combined to a new form.
