1) To strengthen Konoha. The 3rd was dead and Konoha needed a knew Hokage. He put Kakashi and Sasuke in a coma that only Tsunade can fix in order to give Konoha a reason to bring her back and to give her also a reason to come back.
2) He never tried to kidnap Naruto, in fact, he did everything in his power to prevent it. He probably intentionally used a weak genjutsu that Jiraiya could detect on that girl, or put a glitch on it so Jiraiya would notice. He did everything he could to stall for time, from going to the wrong room initially, to chatting up Naruto instead of knocking him the **** out and running with him, to playing around with Sasuke and finally to not genjutsu one shotting Jiraiya like he did Kakashi.
3) It had been known at the time that Sasuke had killed Orochimaru and had formed a talented squad of shinobi. There was no reason for him to doubt Sasuke's abilities, he had faith in his brother.
4) Itachi was a clone functioning only at 30 percent of his true power, plus he was only told to stall Naruto's team, not defeat them.
5) What did he do for Konoha? Saved them from Obito by negotiating a deal with him, Stopped a coupe that might have lead to it's destruction, stopped Kabuto and his edo tensei that might have lead to the end of the world, a world that includes Konoha by the way.
