I wanna say when Gai opens the 8th gate, instead the normal skin turning red and aura, why not destroy his physical body? I'm gonna predict that opening the 8th gate will unleash so much chakra that his physical body can't handle it therefore destroy it leaving guy a body of red colored chakra (with his blood mixed in like naruto in his version 2) so it fits the description Madara mentioned with the red steam. I mean he wouldn't need a body anyways when he's gonna die. Plus it be cool if Gai at the last moments of his life transfers the rest of his chakra to Lee or something like a passing the torch from master to student moment.
