well on narutopedia it says:

It's a tad confusing , I remember in the kisame flashback it showed madara controlling the 4th mizukage (the little jinchurikki dude) but that got me thinking , was it him or was that Tobi ?( I'm not sure of the time frame there)
bro I am not trying to make an argument here. I am being simple in fact.. do you believe he was directly messed up from 1st Hokage or was it Old age.. I did not add a 3rd option that combines the 2 but lets be reasonable.
1. Why did he dissapear off the face of the planet if he wasnt effected somehow not just old age.
2. Reason I ask this Nagato was practically crippled when he summoned the Gedo mazu which would be an argument for anyone with half a brain to ask.
i just sounded like a hypocrite here but those are my thoughts.

i think that had to do with Nagato fueling the gedo mazou with his own chakra to use it, whereas Madara was using chakra coming out of it.
ok, not sure about this, just an idea: maybe the tree made from Hashirama's DNA on top of which the gedo mazou was located served as a battery to charge it and Madara was using that system as life support.
why? he probably ended up almost dead after his fight in VotE. i don't know if he had to use this life support tech immediately because presumably it had to be build first. and on top of that if he was stuck in that room how would he find Nagato to give him the eyes?

and we know from the room and the lotus flower that it is the same location and everything as the one shown in previous chapters. i also can't tell if that thing is inside the bud or not.... in short: not sure, but since most information match and Madara mentioned sth about a statue, then it could be inside but not strong enough yet.
and not sure if it was grown or preserved, the same way Madara uses the Hashirama-DNA-lotus-tree to sustain himself. the point is sb would have to build all of that system and even if Madara found the gedo mazou before VotE, he had no way to put it inside the bud but only AFTER he got Hashi's DNA.
either way, Madara after VotE was probably injured and maybe even felt 'humiliated', which explains why he disappeared from the face of the earth. but he couldn't have been on life support as he had to build this mechanism and even found Nagato and some other Uchiha to get a spare eye.
