I'm a pretty young kid, in my 2nd semester in college. In high school, I used to feel like I had plenty of friends, people I would be able to chill and hangout with or go to parties with. After I graduated, I loss most of the "friends" I had but when I look back, a good bit of those people weren't what I would call quality friends in the first place. They could sketchy at times, lying for no reason, or just having bad morals IMO.

With this said, I think I had made some bad choices choosing the friends I did but I'm not tripping over it or anything, this is just all part of life to me plus I wasn't able to truly be myself around these "friends".

My point being, how do you choose the friends you make? What qualities stand out to you when you decide to try and trust someone new? I have recently learned what qualities I look for after I learned that I made some bad choices choosing friends. Some of the main ones I care about are loyalty, respect, and being genuine. I'm curious to what NB thinks about with choosing friends, and I also kinda hope that no one makes the mistake I did since I don't have as many friends as I'd like now. Maybe this thread will give other people a good mindset when it comes to choosing friends.

Loyalty and respect mainly. Having mutually similar characteristics is a good start. Just find people who you feel you could tell anything to and be yourself with.

I'm in my fourth semester of college and I COMPLETELY understand. It's perfectly normal to lose most of the ppl you called friends in high school. Ppl grow apart. It's natural.

I have no specific qualities I look for in a friend because I don't look for friends. If I hit it off with someone, that's cool. I make friends as I go. No point in searching for them.

The friends I have now are very diverse. When I'm at school, I hang with educated ppl who are low key. When I'm home, I hang with the most ghetto ppl ever. No specific quality, friends are friends.

Respect. I dislike people that say stuff behind your back and I hate that one person who you hate but have to hang out with since they are friends with your friend. :|

When it comes to a friend, I guess I would say is within reality. Meaning they don't live for drugs and partying. I don't mind the partying as much as I like to as well. But I enjoy people I can seriously speak with as well as have a laugh with. Not too "Blunt" I suppose.

I don't mind anybody being my friend as long as they have a sense of understanding when things become rough and have the speech of at least a 7th grader ( Most will understand the second part).

I'm very easy to get along with and very hard to piss off if I enjoy your friendship. :)

Summary: Laid back, Real.

Edit: Apologies for this post being all over the place.

I don't have friends. I only love myself and hate everything else. Including this base and my mom.

Yeah that's the kind of friends I prefer, I hate having to limit myself around others.

I suppose look is the wrong word, I guess I would rephrase it as when you come across someone you're interacting with or associating with. But I don't limit my friends either, my friends can be either be sophisticated or ghetto, I have no preference between the two honestly since I get along with both well enough. I'm a little bit of both of the people you described, I wouldn't go as far to say ghetto but people say I'm educated on the cool haha.

I completely agree. Where I'm from, people call that being "fake", it's quite the popular term.

I think that's another problem I had with friends in high school, most of them were not understanding people. I couldn't speak on another level with most of them, differing opinions also didn't go well which sucks since I'm not big on conformity.

I don't have friends. I only love myself and hate everything else. Including this base and my mom.

Even your mom? :(

I wish that was the case but it's not always like that. Unfortunately, life isn't fair and backstabbers don't always get what they deserve :(

LOL what more could you need in life, like seriously..

Friends are enemies who haven't attacked yet.

That's an interesting way of thinking of it. I guess you could say I'm a bit naive since I don't look at anyone as an enemy, I've never had a reason to do so.

Be angry with to huh? That's a good point, friends are supposed to be on your side for any given scenario.

I have decent charisma skills, I'm able to get along with nearly anyone. I'm better at it now but in the past I chose some bad friends, ones that have none of the qualities you listed in bold so I've gotten to the point were I don't have many friends. I guess it's not necessarily a bad thing though.

Someone like me is someone I have trouble finding. I wouldn't say I'm weird but I'm just too different on my peers, I think differently than most of the people around me.

Friends come and go. A true friend is for life. So, the proof comes along with time. Especially during hard times and times of friction, when you prove to each other that the bond is stronger then any differences you may have.
I don't think there is any sort of tell in a person's character that would be the one quality (or few) that serve as a quantifying factor to rate the friendship.

Maybe in the future I could better address what would seem to be that some people draw the "wrong" people in.
That is a whole other issue, all of it's own.
