What if the Kaguya clan, Juugo's clan and Uzumaki clan had some sort of connection to Hagoromo's brother or Kaguya herself?
As we already know, Orochimaru had a member of each of these clans (Kimmimaro, Karin and Juugo) as his test subjects. He had access to Hashirama's DNA (because he tested it on babies like Yamato) and he found the Ryuuchi cave where he could have gained Sage Mode, but didn't have a strong enough body to support and acquire it. So, he had access to: The Uzumaki clan, Kaguya Clan, Senju clan, Juugo's clan and Sage Mode. The missing clan? Uchiha.
This could explain why he was so determined in gaining Sasuke's body and the sharingan. What if his persistence in gaining the sharingan and to master all the jutsu in the world was just a cover up to his actual plans, which could (assumably) be to gain the power of Kaguya herself, by merging the powers of all these clans? This could also be an alternative explanation to why he gave Sasuke the curse mark to test if he would be compatible with Sage mode, so Orochimaru could know whether Sasuke's body could be a suitable vessel for all of these clans powers. This would probably give Sasuke the rinnegan + more.
This is just a thought, but it seems plausible. Someone in another thread (sorry can't find you) also said that when Kabuto told Itachi and Sasuke that he was the "closest thing to the SO6P" it makes sense now as he posessed the power of Karin, Kimmaro and Juugo. Maybe this is why Kabuto also had a keen interest in Sasuke until recently when he told Suigetsu that he wasn't interested in taking/capturing Sasuke anymore.
