I watched "The amazing Spider-man movie a couple of weeks ago" and I was genuinely impressed. It had great special effects, the story was good enough to hold my attention throughout, and it had an excellent balance of romance, comedy, and even tragedy. In fact, I liked it so much, I watched all 65 episodes of the spider-man the animated series and the 25 episodes episodes of spectacular spider-man on youtube. Then I decided I'd go ahead and watch the original 3 movies again. Maybe I had been too judgemental in my youth for them not staying to closely to the show....but no that wasn't it at all. All three of those movies are just bad.
The problem with Sam Raimi's spider-man series is he's trying too hard to make the audience feel sorry for Peter Parker. I mean yeah, spider-man is a tragic hero with the death of his uncle, the fact that he's just an average guy doesn't have alot of money, and its hard for him to hold a relationship because of his double life, but I feel in all of the movies of the first spider-man trilogy they crank up the level of sympathy the audience is meant to feel for Peter and even the villains that he faces, it makes it more like a soap opera instead of an action movie. It doesn't really give you much time to just appreciate how cool spider-man is because you're feeling bad for him during the whole movie. Spider-man isn't joking nearly as much as he should be during his fight scenes in this series if at all. His amusing quips make spider-man standout compared to just any other super hero fighting.
For some reason as passive as Tobey Maguire portrays Peter Parker, he's an a-hole to the one person he should respect the most, Uncle Ben. They had an arguement in the "Amazing spider-man" too but that was understandable because his uncle was actually mad at him in that movie. But in this movie, his uncle just tries to give him advice in a calm, understanding manner and Tobey is an ass to him for no reason. And I'm sorry but Tobey is too nerdy and ugly and was a poor choice to be Peter Parker. In the comics and show, Peter Parker is attractive enough to have two or more women wanting him and thats just not believable for guy that looks like Tobey Macguire. They try to run with that idea of a love triangle in the third movie, but by then, Mary Jane and him are already dating so he just looks like a jerk and for some reason they decided the other woman should be Gwen Stacey which is stupid because at this point she's just a pointless cameo. Mary Jane in this series isn't portrayed very well either. In the beginning she's dating Flash Thompson who has so little development in this movie, you wouldn't even be able to guess he's canon to the spider-man storyline. She falls in love with three different guys. Now while that may make more sense throughout a series of episodes, in a single movie that just makes her look slutty. In spider-man TAS Mary Jane and Peter are so much more devoted to eachother and it gives an overall better feeling than the depressing situation they're in onscreen.
They did a great job of putting in Gwen Stacy as the leading woman of "The amazing Spider-man" because it makes it feel like its more than just a remake of the first movie but also because she's actually cannon in the comics as being his first girlfriend. And she's alot more likeable. You feel the romance between her and Peter the whole time whereas his relationship with Mary Jane in the other movies is a constant struggle of just getting her to notice him while she's dating other men and pushing her away when she finally admits to liking him.
Theres alot more things I can point out what makes the first three movies so bad compared to "The amazing spider-man" but I'll hold off on that for now.
For anyone who only knew spider-man through the spider-man trilogy and likes it, I recommend watching 5-10 episodes of Spider-man TAS and Spectacular Spider-man and you'll see how much better Spider-man could have been and why the reboot version is such a blessing.
