Laughing at people saying that MS is what makes him powerful. He became ANBU captain before he got MS, he already was a genius.
His ability in genjutsu and his skillful movements makes him very powerful, but his biggest strength and what makes him above almost everyone is his great intelligence and analytical skills. He is able to predict his opponents moves and is able to see through people's heart and minds as Kabuto said. That allows him to create a strategy to quick beat his opponents, most of the time without killing them.
Itachi is above MS Sasuke. He may have become more powerful later but during the manga Itachi was above MS Sasuke. That's why he was babysitting his bro in their fight against Kabuto. He also has more skillful feats than Sasuke and defeated almost all of his opponents alone, unlike Sasuke, who needed aid in his fights, even with EMS unlocked.
