~ Short version ~
A good thread means a well formed idea, enough details to start a proper discussion, written properly and posted in the right section.
~ Longer version ~
- The best threads are the ones that evoke a mutual interest with forum members and add something which hasn't been said before. The search function is your friend. Use it to double check that your theory, question, opinion, etc has not already been posted recently.
- Remember that a poorly written thread has more chances of getting derailed fast. If your post is unclear you may end up explaining yourself again and again, and the discussion on the real topic may just meet it's early demise. Similarly if you start with an arrogant speech in your OP calling other people names or questioning their intelligence then you write doom of your thread yourself.
- Keep it organized. No one wants to read a giant wall of text without paragraphs and full stops. Use quotes and other proper tags when needed.
- Pay attention to the thread title. Proper tags ( spoiler/theories/news depending on the sections) and a clear indication of the subject matter lets members know what to expect. Avoid adding spoilers in it about the latest chapters. It ruins for other users who haven't read it yet and don't want to know what to expect beforehand.
- Add a Poll(if need be) : Everyone has an opinion and it's easier to know which way members are leaning if it's there. Keep in mind that poll consists of plenty of options. 'Yes' and 'No' are usually not enough. Put in an extra neutral/other option so that people can still vote if they are undecided or have some other ideas of their own.
A proper poll, with options taking account of different scenario's or choices which may come up ( at least the major ones) encourages people to express their opinion. This may lead to debate, which is always good for the lifespan of a thread, as long as the forum rules are being followed.
- Are you ready to hit that submit button at the bottom? First hit that preview button next to it! Is there anything else to add, or edit out unneeded bits? Would you want to read this thread, if someone else posted it?
- Participate and take care of your thread: People often create threads and expect it to go on on its own. If you are active within your thread, it may inspire others to contribute to it as well. Of course, it does mean that you spam it or bump it without any reason to. Make sure your posts further the discussion. Report if someone is spamming in it or flame wars are arising. If flames are not responded to and taken care of timely - that again helps it in staying around longer.
Now, if you have done all that, congratulations!
You just made a good thread!
