Characters that are hard to peg down, characters that can't be put into the white or black area. Characters that do good deeds but also make morally wrong decisions, ambigious decisions that can be seen as right or wrong...

Basically, a character in the Grey area. Much more interesting then a goodie 2 shoes or a simple villain. But of course, that's just the concept - it also needs to be executed well.

A good character in this type of manga meets a combination of the following criteria:

1. They are very kind (if they are a protagonist like Naruto, Hinata, Chouji, Lee, etc...) or very dominating in personality (if they are a villain like Madara or Obito). If they are the main rival, then it is okay for them to be prideful in an entertaining way (like Vegeta from DBZ), but not arrogant to the point where they are just annoying jerks that would get on my nerves (like how Sasuke was in part 1). For antagonists, it is also cool for them to be motivated by a painful backstory like Nagato and Obito. Calm and collected villains (like Itachi before we found out the truth about him) are also good.

2. If it is a villain, they absolutely must have a lot of power and they must have a significant amount of success. They can not be all hype. Such examples of good villains include Madara, Obito, Nagato, Ganondorf, Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes, and Plankton from Spongebob (he took over Bikini Bottom, stole the Krabby Patty formula and nearly had Mr Krabs killed in the spongebob movie. He has also nearly gotten the formula many times in the main series and has been stopped simply by plot many times. Plankton is a good planner.) As you can see by this list, I also value villains that are good planners. Basically, a good villain is all about success. Success= Epicness!

3. This next one applies to anyone. Good strategists and tacticians are also cool. Shikamaru is a prime example of this. He lacks power, but he was still able to use pure brain power to defeat Hidan. To this day, I still wish Shikamaru would eat the shinju fruit and then become hokage.

4. I have already stated power, but I was talking mainly about the villains, so I will state this again for heroes. The main hero and main rival must always obtain massive amounts of power! This is a must (along with the main villain)!

5. As for comic relief, just make sure the character is legitimately funny. Suigetsu is sometimes a good example of this whereas Karin is not.

These are the qualities of a good character.
