All these arcs in Part 1 are godlike, everyone is relavent and balanced in powerscale , lots of mysterious characters, and great villains, great amount of suspense, the battle formula works like battle stategy with all the cool kunias equipments, and all the handseal and jutsu KKG type that was established, Naruto and these konoha11 folks are likable, and lastly they expanding upon the world building aspect and clans history.

Now in Shippuden, the powerscaling is off the roof nothing more but DBZ explosion and countless BS Powerups and too much inconsistencies and plotholes and it has alot of redundant dialogues/flashback and clitche fights . Everyone doesn't get their time to shine. The characters that we grew up with wind up getting trolled such as Neji, Minato or Kishi ruined characters that was once great written for example, Naruto, Obito, Kiba, etc.

Tournament arcs are always boss. No underlying plot/motive, no bs, winner take all.

Same OP, Been a fan of series since part 1 and the the bloody mist arc is so meh to me now like seriously I go back and watch it and say "meh" I appreciate the fact Kishi brought Zabuza and Haku back in the war arc for some closure and honestly I like how they went out better. But in my honest opinion The ONLY interesting thing about the Chunin exam arc was Gaara everything else was good, but wasn't no Gaara. Let's be real! He was carrying that arc by himself, hmmm well Sarutobi Vs Orochimaru was very nice but still Gaara was the key factor in why that arc worked and plus the reason why people put it on a pedestal is because of nostalgia. Nostalgia really clouds your judgement on things honestly and some people just don't notice that or in denial that it isn't as great as it is in they mind. That's usually how people work when it come to these sort of things.

I've never understood the appeal of Part 1, except for the Sasuke retrieval arc. The chuunin exams reminded me of a Pokemon tournament.

Perhaps it's because I was older when I started watching/reading a couple of years ago. At the beginning of Part 2, it seemed as though the looming threats were larger and more threatening than in Part 1. Maybe it's because there was more Itachi, and characters like Obito and Madara.

Still, I doubt I'll ever be as caught up in a manga as I've been in Naruto.

I think that's what did it for me, I was already older than most of these folks when I started reading/watching, so the Chuunin Exams Arc just reminded me of things like Pokemon (which I hated) and the DBZ Tournament Arcs (which I found to be a waste of time). By starting with Shippuden, I began the series when the main series story arc was underway.

So.. do you think the failed Sasuke retrieval arc that introduced Sai from Shippuden was better than the Sasuke retrieval arc in part 1?

yup much better. THe interaction between sai/Yamato/Naruto/Sasuke.. all day much better. Plus, the fight they had.. neat fight. Introduction of art style , expansion on mokuton, Orochimaru's techs, Danzo's plot to take over the village revelation..

Don't know how part 1 of sasuke retieval arc comes close to it.. Only way i can say it does is if we are talking anime.. the fillers in the anime made that arc nice.. Manga however isn't the same story.
