What kind of mission made whitefang of konoha to abandon mission for his friends sake

It bugging me ever since I have seen that episode.I think that dangerous mission have something to do with jinchurikis or Madara.Could he have been know that Madara is alive and decided to abandon the mission.Your thoughts please.

Could've been about the Jinchuurikis, but I don't believe it's about Madara because everyone thought/knew he was dead at that time.

but most likely it had something to do with a upcomming war / kekkei genkai/secret jutsu which couldn't fall in enemy hands.

He saved his comrades, but because of that many people from Konoha died afterwards is what they said so most likely one the things I mentioned above

something like kisames mission when he had to kill all the people with the intel, except instead he killed himself in shame of what he did?

maybe his mission was to retrieve the intel that the enemy had and he has to choose weather to get the intel or to save his comrades

He had to deliver a cake to another village, but he dropped it. He was so embarrass he failed his mission he killed himself
