I just wanted to post this because it seems like a lot of people are still going around with the concept that old age is needed to unlock the Rinnegan this is not true, at least in part.

Now we know Senju DNA + Uchiha + Some Unknown unlock mechanism = Rinnegan

The addition of Senju DNA to an Uchiha does indeed need time to acclimatise and attach itself to the host body. However this likely takes months to years at most. IE not decades. Hence something was holding Madara back from unlocking the Rinnegan.

---------------------------------

From what we have seen all previous levels of the Sharingan were unlocked by some heightened emotional status. IE Fear of death and "need" unlock the initial Sharingan dojutsu.

MS is triggered by killing your closest one and feeling overwhelming guilt in ones actions.

EMS unlike all previous lvls is unlocked via surgery, creating a combination of the donor and the host user's own MS abilities.

-------------------------------------

Madara likely suspected that there was some emotional state he needed to enter in order to unlock the Rinnegan. He knew this, but it took him decades to finally enter that state.

Let us put ourselves in Madara's shoes in these late years of his life.

His plans are on the edge of failure. His natural life span is coming to an end, and as a result his life works and plans are on the edge of complete ruin.

Everything depended on HIS ability to awaken the Rinnegan. The gedo, the Juubi, infinite tsukuyomi it all depends on him gaining the Rinnegan. It is the key stone, without it nothing else is possible.

A man like Madara does not give up easily, he would likely have kept his belief in his own powers and determination right up until the very end.

However EVERYONE has a breaking point and Madara met his in the form of giving up and giving into hopelessness. An emotion like that cannot be gained by a man of Madara's prowess and ability. He has an unfailing belief in himself that he would always succeed.

It was only when he was faced with his own death and the absolute failure of his plans that he ACCEPTED his own personal failure.

It is likely Madara's most silent most humbling memory he possesses. It is also likely the moment of his greatest shame.

His hopelessness is what awakened the Rinnegan. It gives away its awakening requirements in its name. The Rinnegan is the eye of Samsara. The wheel of eternal suffering. In its very most basic this is the concept for HOPELESSNESS.

For a man like Madara this emotion as I have said before was impossible for him to gain until his old age. That is why he couldn't awaken the Rinnegan until later.

Its also why Madara didn't state what the true requirements for the Rinnegan actually are, he is embarrassed at his own weakness.

You think it was just his frustration? That seems....well I just don't see it. Or are you pulling my leg Hiru?

When frustration is extended to the limits, hopelessness is born. The feeling to be powerless, the feeling of being a mere human that can't go past certain limits, everything is born from frustration.

The frustration due lack of power is exactly what the Elder Son would feel if its way of see things didn't workout as expected. You shall remember that Power was the Path of the Elder Son.

Acceptance
Which can only be achieved through understanding which is obtained through experience.

The rinnegan is based off Budihsm.

The four noble truths are:
The truth of dukkha (suffering, anxiety, unsatisfactoriness
hat all beings must experience suffering and pain at some point in their lives, including the inevitable sufferings of illness, aging, and death

This is seen within madara's assessment of life.
Being that others cannot truly understand each other and one must become a loser for others to win.
Which translates to thus said suffering and the inevitable aging, loss, defeat and death that awaits all.

The truth of the origin of dukkha
The second noble truth is that the origin of dukkha can be known. Within the context of the four noble truths, the origin of dukkha is commonly explained as craving or thirst conditioned by ignorance . On a deeper level, the root cause of dukkha is identified as ignorance of the true nature of things.
Seen through madara's quest for the knowledge and power to change the world (Albeit in a twisted way)
And his speech in which shinobi are ignorant to the sages true message and the origin to the power humans manifest in present day.

The truth of the cessation of dukkha
literally refers to the absence or extinction of a given entity
refers to the cessation of suffering and the causes of suffering. It is "the cessation of all the unsatisfactory experiences and their causes in such a way that they can no longer occur again. It’s the removal, the final absence, the cessation of those things, their non-arising. According to the Buddhist point of view, once we have developed a genuine understanding of the causes of suffering, such as craving and ignorance, then we can completely eradicate these causes and thus be free from suffering

This is an easy one madara has obtained the tablet and identified chakra as the problem

and the fourth noble truth identifies a path to this cessation.

The eternal tsukuyomi is the key to getting rid of the evil chakra once and for all.

Humility and powerlessness the activator for the greatest Uchiha power. As speculative as this is I love this idea.

Quite poetic for a clan that values blood purity, pride, and power as virtues.
