he is supposed to be a religious leader. thats all. his main reason is to sway the way the masses think by controlling their belief system. something like a president, but much more sinister....a man will die for his beliefs before his country...thats why the pope is who he is...

Google or Wiki. Or ask a Catholic. This site would be the last place I would come to for answers.

He's supposed to be the closest connection between humans and God, and the role model for all Catholics worldwide

He is supposed to be the Vicar of Christ, just like Apostle Peter I think.

I think the pope system is derived from the emperor Ceasar. All people bow down to the pope. It symbolizes the Roman empire which is being expanded by U.S.A. and Europe. Europe is the roman empire nowadays and vatican city plays a big role in it.

The american revolutionary war was a war for actual freedom. Europe didn't allow that and made sure usa became it's dog.

I went to a Catholic school and even had to do a GCSE in it, so yeah...

The Pope (a.k.a the Vicar of Christ) is like a substitute for Jesus, acting in his place as leader. Pope is a term created later on, as St. Peter was the first one to take on the responsibilities at Jesus' request but the term was never coined in the bible.

I think you forget that the Pope was only the head of the Western church, and the Papal States were formed only after Pepin the Short had donated the areas to the Pope in 756.
Meanwhile the Eastern Roman Empire with Byzantium as its capital, existed till 1453 and its citizens called themselves Romans.

Also if anything, then the true successor of the Western Roman Empire was the Holy Roman Empire revived in 800 by Charlemagne, and then in 962 by Otto, and it existed till Napoleon dismissed it.
