The drama was on point.
It wasn't a kids show.
The fights scenes were awesome, some favorites of mine:

I believe that the main reasons that makes Naruto being the most popular anime of the world is probably the 'needy child with Talk no Jutsu will save the world' plot, also the well developed affinity of each characters that makes someone like them or not as we can see through the threads of this forum.

The Naruto/Sasuke dynamic is brilliant. And the lore is bigger than the MC. I think if Naruto was always the focus every chapter it would not have been as good but there are great supporting characters in this series.
