What is the appeal of Kill la Kill?

Right. Watched all of TTGL and it instantly became the best anime/piece of fiction i've ever seen. Cut ahead to last year when Kill la Kill, the companies next work was released. I was hugely hyped and ready for an all new series and it was just....what? The obnoxious, over the top characters, the little respect it had for it's own hero and villain, the 90% fanservice 10% plot exposure, the genericness, the repetitive uninspiring plot.....I was pretty disappointed.

The worst part about it is that this show actually has beautiful animation and a nice set-up. A badass female lead and main villain? YOU'RE SPOILING ME GAINAX but then all that is lost the second they flash their naked bodies every 5 seconds in the name of fanservice.

I mean how are you meant to be intimidated by a villain when you've basically seen her exposed boobs by episode 3? I get you're not meant to take this show seriously but with that mindset...it's just anime garbage.

I come back now and watch it a few months later giving it another chance and...what can I say, whilst it IS watchable- I WAS totally right with my first impression. So seriously, what is the appeal of this show? Is there some underlying message i'm missing? Is it a homage/parody of other schoolgirl fight animes that have come before it? Is it just bright flashy lights and bouncing boobs for an idiot audience?

My favourite genre of anime is the surrealist genre and STILL this anime confuses the f*ck out of me. ​

I realise I'm judging a show I haven't finished yet but it IS very obvious it will be more of the same. I just don't get why a schoolgirl fanservice anime can be good unless done ironically.

Haven't seen it yet... but to be fair, I hated TTGL for quite a while in the beginning, and only later did I really start to love it. Maybe this will be the same way? I hate to base it off random reviews but if it suddenly ups a few tiers I'll probably know about it... probably not until then.

The thing is with TTGL is that it just started off quite silly/childish and OTT for a pretty justified reason. Kamina was essentially the main character and Simon was literally a child but with Kill la Kill it's so obviously 100% OTT mode engaged from the first episode that it's clear it's just the style of the show rather than being for any real reason.

Seriously I feel more embarrassed watching Kill la Kill than I do watching/reading actual hentai. It's just smut, I just hope it's smut for a reason.

Same here. I was wondering what the hype was about as well.

I didn't even really read any hype, were people seriously preaching how good it was? I was just excited from the name Gainax.

For as much as i love this show i can't say i can defend it if that's your opinion
But i'll try
In my opinion the comedy is spot on, the timing is great how over the top the characters are ( i don't know if you saw ep 4 but it is funny as duck)
The show is subtly parodying other tropes, TTGL and even itself at times, it's a bit hard to explain i guess you have to watch it
The animation is awsome and so are the fight scenes, i think that trigger realy knows how make hype fights
And finnaly the fanservice... This is a bit hard to defend but in my point of view i've stoped caring. I've seen so many naked guys and girls (at equal rates) in this show man, it parodies itself for it's fanservice at times and it's shameless, it puts things straight out thre is no let's go to the beach ep or bathouse scene ( kind of)
And the antagonist is more of a rival... Just watch everything and if you still deslike it then report me to the mods or whatever

Sidesidenote: i realy like the OTT content in this show but you have to have in mind that some characters continue being crazy while others become more grounded

Seriously? Wow I did only get to the Trap Committee episode. I will keep watching so I hope you're right- it's just clear this won't be the huge hit TTGL was for me. Do Satsuki and Ryoko start getting better treatment? Because you can sell a show to me with a strong awesome female lead ALONE. I just don't want to see their tits every 10 minutes yknow? Especially a villain who is meant to be slightly threatening.

Awesome post. Going to go watch some now and hope I start bonding with it a little more. Started Hunter X Hunter and Kyousougiga lately though so it might take a little time if the next few episodes dont grip me instantly.

Well for some reason i like this more than gurren lagann but it was such an epic anime that i can't argue against you. Just so you know ep 15 is just amazing ep 16 and 17 plot kicks in as well as a bunch of plot twists that make the story much bigger in scale

Okay I watched a bunch more and I can definitely agree they're cutting back on the OTT zaniness. Now there's just the right amount that it's not obnoxious.

Just watched the Mako VS Ryoko episode and i'm definitely getting more into it.
