What is orochimaru

I don't know but has there ever been any explanation in the manga or by kishi as to what tf orochimaru is? I use to think he attained some eternal snake mode but then he's been that way since childhood before becoming a real ninja, he's also an orphan, and what else? Kabuto turns into that same species after sucking oros dna too.
