The timeline of when Jiraya taught these two always confuses me.

At first I used to think that Nagato was much older than Minato and that Jiraya trained Nagato years before Minato.

However what confuses me is when Yahiko first starts the akatsuki, I can't tell how old the orphans are then. From the time Jiraya left them, they looked no older than 14. When they started akatsuki, it's hard to tell of they are in their late teens or early 20s.

What made it even more confusing is that when Obito first approached them, that was after the events of Rins death. Meaning Minato would've been the Hokage (or at least a Jonin) and a full grown man. But then Nagato was still pretty young and in his early days of akatsuki. Or were Nagato, Yahiko and Konan actually just quite old and in their late 20s or early 30s - I always assumed they were still young and only a few years had passed since jiraya left them.

So what? Are Nagato and minato around the same age, is minato older or younger. I have no clue.

I definitely think Nagato is older by 3-8 years.

When 14 year old Obito approached Nagato's group, they looked in their mid-late 20s. Minato was probably 21-22ish when he trained 12 year old Obito/Kakashi/Rin. So Minato was likely early-mid 20s when he died, while Nagato was mid-late 20s. The manga confirms Minato was younger than 28 when he became Hokage, because a feudal lord notes how Minato was younger than part 2 Kakashi when he became the 4th.

It is very much possible Jiraiya trained Minato, Went to war (Genin weren't allowed to go to war) and came back after training the orphans. That would actually make Minato older, and would justify Jman's need to get back to the village.

But it is also very possible he trained the orphans, went home and during a 3-8 year buffer became a teacher due to war experience, and trained Minato.

Good thread btw, I think I briefly thought about who Jman trained first (minato/Nagato)a few years ago.

Nagato is definitely older seeing as how he was definitely over 40 when he fought Naruto, and that Minato would be 37-ish at that point in time
I'm pretty sure Minato would be in his 40s during the pain invasion arc considering, Shikaku, Choza, Fugaku, etc were all in their 40s when the series stared. 42 in part 2.

Edit:
But then again, that would suggest that minato was around 28 during the ninetails attack, and that can't be right.

He trained them as kids and spent approximately 5 years with them. Then he trained Minato and his team.

Madara put his eyes in Nagato before Jiraiya got there. So before or during the second war.

I confused myself. FUDGE IT. Its like a five year difference with Nagato being older.

Minato was in his late 20s around the time he became Hokage. This can be inferred since the only mention of his age was the fact that he wasn't 30 years of age when he became the Hokage. Nagato most likely is slightly older. I think the age gap between the 2nd and 3rd shinobi world war is small. Nagato was a child at the time. Minato might have been younger. Jiraiya leaves and eventually becomes a Jonin. Minato is 10. At that point, Nagato was probably 10+.

They are the same age.

Both would be about 42-43 if they were alive.

And no the Konoha 11 parents were 38 when series started.
Pretty sure they are 41-42, that's according to Naruto.wiki and they take all statistics from the databook. So I don't think it's wrong.

Minato couldn't have been in his late 20s. The feudal lords said minato was younger than kakashi when they were about to appoint Kakashi as Hokage. And Kakashi is 27-29. So minato must have been younger than that.

Sir Derp actually did an interesting calculation showing that Minato was around 21-24 when he died. I'll see if I can find it

Edit: Found
Minato is 16 years Tsunade's junior, Tsunade is now 54 so she was 38 when Naruto was Born which would make Minato 22 at the time of his death

They are 41-42 in part 2....... not Part 1

How did he calculate Minato is 16 years younger than Tsunade? His age was never given to begin with.
