It's a chakra disruption basically, it's not a form of genjutsu, just the overwhelming power of chakra through the things Pein uses to send chakra through (As far as my memory can think back to )

But yeah Jiraiya explains when he gets stabbed by it (When he's in his frog) if I remember correctly

The answer is simple. Upon the stab impact, Naruto who is in sage mode can trace the exact location of where Pain receieves his chakra.

And what pains does there is disrupt your chakra for a moment (a sort of genjutsu: disrupting chakra flow), but it doesn't get you in an illusion.
Because those black things are chakra receivers, when you get hit by it, the chakra of Pain flows in ya and your own chakra flow gets disrupted.

My ideas its either KFCs secret recipie, or maybey it has something to do with the death of the sage or something about his techiques.

I also wondered about this. It must be effecting their chakra some how cant think of anything other than some sort of powerful genjutsu though since it even effected Kakashi's sharingan.

I'll say that just as genjutsu disturbs your chakra flow into illusion. The Rinnegan-user chakra disturbs the normal chakra flow (same for Senjutsu).

Since the chakra rods transmits chakra from Nagato, once they are stabbed into opponents, the latter feel a disturbance in their powers. Hence we can say that Rinnegan-user chakra and Sage Natural chakra are special chakra that disturb normal chakra of people who never trained for it. It's a kinda new sensation but I doubt it of being a genjutsu.

If you remember after he defeats pain he sticks the chakra rod into his arm to find Nagato and his sage mode eyes appear behind Nagato.

I think it probably just happens when you get stuck with the chakra rods connected to Nagato, and you realize that there is someone controlling people with them

i always thought the image of the eyes was just kinda symbolic of how Pain's chakra is coming into Naruto thru the chakra reciever, and vice versa when Naruto uses his sage mode to reverse the effect and you see the sage mode eyes

He used this against jiraiya too apparantly if you are stabbed with one of those black rods for example your arm he can stop its motion or control it and when he stabbed naruto he said he would easily be able to control naruto at close range but against kakashi I don't know what it was cuz he wasn't stabbed
