So I don't think something needs to originate in Japan do be considered. So what do you guys think Avatar is considered?

To me, I just feel it fits the cartoon category over anime, but I don't really know why? Also, anime can have manga counterparts, though Avatar clearly states to have a comic book counterpart.

An amazing cartoon.

I just refer to everything as cartoons or animation. All the same.

Plus, anime has a certain bad stigma and most are shit with stupid Japanese tropes, so I'm not including my favorite thing of all time into the same category as things like Fairy Tail.

Technically I guess it isn't anime because the writing, production and animation are all done outside of Japan. Although it is clearly inspired by eastern and anime styles. I'd like to consider it anime though. Amazing series :)

I stuck in a grayzone on what it should be considered, you could say it's an anime because of it's eastern influences and art styles, however it was produced and written by a western production company so it's a cartoon

:mad:_@:

There is too much ambiguity on the topic, plus there are other examples out in the world that make me think that nothing is set in stone of what is an anime and what isn't.

ATLA is a cartoon that could be confused as an anime, while some episodes of Legend of Korra are anime because they were animated by Studio Pierrot.
