It's used in Track and Field or Cross Country. It's basically a set tempo predetermined by the team, coach, or yourself at how fast you should be running.

So if the coach says you'll be doing a 6 minute tempo run, it means you should be running at a constant speed all throughout and finish a mile in 6 minutes, give or take a few seconds.

The reason people do Tempo Runs is so that they can get a feel of how fast they need to go to get a certain time in a run. After a few weeks of tempo runs, I was able to tell the difference between running a 5 minute 30 second mile and a 6 minute mile, just by the feeling of how fast I was moving

He could've educated him/herself by googling such matters, I did.

If you're an intermediate marathoner, then you should know on your own...

It's dependent on you. Try to run 6-8 miles everyday for intermediate level. If you're going to run 6 miles, run it all at about a 6 minute tempo, so it should be around 35 minutes. You can still go 6 minute tempo for 8 miles too. Every 2nd mile though, you should try and give a burst of speed for a constant 30 seconds.

The whole point is, you should be able to estimate time and speed on your own. You want to be able to run and not have to look at your watch, and still get a close idea of how fast you are going.

Be sure to do a warmup before and a cool down after though

Based on the name I would guess it's running to a tempo. A tempo is a music term meaning pace so you run in rhythm to the pace of the music. I'm not sure but Google probably is.
