What is a "cookie"?

Okay, as some of you may or may not know, the Conflicker worm is around right now, so companies like Microsoft are advising to watch for viruses and other things. Well, I'd rather not my laptop be hacked, so I run a virus scan every night before bed, and I don't get any viruses, but I keep getting warnings from things called "cookies". I cleared the cookies I had using the tools, and ran another scan, and there where no warnings, but what exactly is a "cookie?
