Imagine Naruto with Rinnegan, full Kurama, and RSM (though he might not have gotten/needed the latter if he did get Nagato's eyes). This has been bothering me for a while...

I postulated that for so long. It would have made so much sense at the time, but then again for the series continuity sake, him not getting the Rin'negan allowed the villains to be stronger at some point. A Rin'negan BM Naruto at the beginning of the war would have stomped Edo Madara and Tobi (masked) would have been figured out a long time before he did since he Bijuu are going down to the combined power of Naruto's Rin'negan and Kurama.

Either Nagato was too emotional at that moment to think properly or Kishi is just being Kishi.

When you try and forcibly integrate styles that aren't your own, you end up weaker ​because you can't fully make use of it and you yourself are inhibited.

A physically orientated fighter using doujutsu is a very stupid idea.

Nagato was dumb and thought he was special because he had supposedly awoken those eyes himself.

Why would a guy who saw himself as a god think that the eyes that granted him that power could be handled by, or even given to anyone else?

Kishi just probably didn't think about it though, since he already wanted Tobi to get the eyes.

I think this may have had something to do with Nagato still believing that Tobi was actually "Madara"..and we all know about the hype Madara had that made most shinobi wet their pants.
Tobi did a kickass job of carrying Madara's name,his own feats under that name only furthered that hype.
Hence,i think Nagato thought that by not giving the Rinnegan to Naruto and hiding it with his body was protecting Naruto from "Madara/Tobi"until he became even stronger.I think even though Naruto kicked Nagato's ass he assesed him to still be below Madara's level atleast then.

Nagato was probably not aware that the eyes could be transplanted and retain their powers.

Also, the story could have ended at the end of that arc, which might not have been such a bad thing

I think Naruto could handle it, his chakra is huge, but his chakra control isn't super good.
