Danzo didn't hide because he was a *****; he hid to become Hokage. I'm pretty sure he's smart enough to realize fighting in the war will give him more cred than hiding. Hell, if he thought Naruto would make a better Hokage, he would let him. Danzo's motivations are making Konoha as strong as possible.
