Lately the manga has been looking like a bunch of scribbles to me.

lol, pretty much. Gets kinda iffy during these huge battles.

It was definitely his Nunchaku, though. And no, they didn't become huge, or grow scales, you lunatics... They always had a scale-like pattern to them; and its a close up, so we get a different/better look at them for once.
