Was it when Madara first took control of him? I would think he got all this hate even before that. So what caused it?

Good question, he could have been just made that way, afterall he was once part of the Juubi and all the Bijuu have different personalities as i've viewed. But like you said, it could be because he was being controlled multiple times, being inside a body, etc.

Probably the one who started using him was Elder son(with his sage eyes? ) and then people like Madara made it even worst.Think about how you will feel if you are only even considered as just a weapon to kill and nothing else,anyone other than Rikudo & Naruto didn't gave a shit about Kurama even to learn his name.
