Kishi didn't sell out, Shueisha just wanted to profit more off the back of Naruto's success. He wouldn't have been able to say one way or another, since the company own the rights to use the series.

But yeah, Naruto's way did fail. The failure was quite pleasantly realistic, what I fear though, is that Naruto's supposed death isn't going to be so realistic. I'll cringe hard if this Kawaki guy is managing to kill him in a square fight.
